Urine Incontinence

Urinary Incontinence

The inability to hold urine resulting in involuntary leakage of urine is called urinary incontinence. While it can happen to anyone, it is more common in older women. Urinary incontinence is quite common, and an understandably embarrassing and uncomfortable condition to suffer through. However, depending on the nature and cause of incontinence, it is treatable!

Stress incontinence

In this type of incontinence, urine leaks whenever the intra-abdominal pressure rises, like when coughing, sneezing, jumping, lifting heavy weights, or laughing. If your condition is mild, you can benefit from pelvic exercises that strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and improve bladder control. In more severe cases, a corrective surgery may be required, like Burch colposuspension, mid-urethral sling-tension-free vaginal tape (TVT), etc.

Urge incontinence

Urge incontinence occurs when you get a sudden urge to urinate, and you are unable to hold it in. You may feel frequent urges to urinate, and find yourself waking up through the night to pee. This type of incontinence can be caused by an infection, or a more severe condition such as a neurological disorder or diabetes. Once I am able to treat or help manage the underlying condition, then the incontinence itself can improve.

When should you see a doctor

Urinary incontinence can range in severity, and while some women are able to manage, others might find that it affects their daily life. If you find that you are unable to control your pee, or the urges are so sudden and intense that you are afraid to be too far away from a bathroom ever, then you should see a doctor.
