Your pelvic floor consists of muscles that support important organs in your pelvis – your bladder, bowel and uterus. Pelvic Organ Prolapse is a condition when one or more of the pelvic organs (the uterus, bowel, bladder or top of the vagina) slide down from their normal position and bulge into the vagina.
How do I know if I have a pelvic organ prolapse?
While a prolapse is not life-threatening, it can cause pain and discomfort. Common symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse include:
Feeling of heaviness around your lower belly and/or genitals
Dragging discomfort or feeling of something coming down into your vagina
Feeling or seeing a lump or swelling inside or coming out of your vagina
Numbness or discomfort during sex
Difficulty urinating; for instance feeling like you haven’t been able to completely empty your bladder, urge to pee frequently, or leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, or exercise.
If you experience any of these symptoms or are concerned that you have pelvic organ prolapse, come visit your gynaecologist at Adrita.
Treatment for pelvic organ prolapse.
We decide on the best treatment option for you based on the degree of prolapse, and severity of symptoms. Treatment options can include:
Lifestyle modifications - making some lifestyle changes like losing weight if you are overweight, eating a balanced diet that prevents constipation, and avoiding heavy weight lifting, can help manage symptoms.
Regular pelvic floor exercises that strengthen your pelvic muscles.
Vaginal pessaries - these are devices which can be inserted in the vagina to improve the support to the pelvic organs.
Corrective surgeries - in severe cases corrective surgeries like pelvic floor repair, vaginal hysterectomy, or sacrocolpopexy (open or laparoscopic) may be required to treat pelvic organ prolapse.
