Urinary Tract Infections

Unless you’re one of the few women who have never had a UTI, you probably already know what it feels like! Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) refer to infections in any part of the urinary system – the bladder, kidneys or the tubes connecting them. You might feel a frequent need to pee, yet pass little urine when you go. Your urine might be cloudy, blood-tinged, and strong-smelling. Women are at a higher risk of UTIs than men. UTIs can be painful and annoying, but usually pass with treatment.

UTI Symptoms

Infections in the bladder or urethra (tube that carries urine out of the body), referred to as Lower UTIs, are quite common and generally easily treatable with antibiotics. You should come see me if you experience any of the following symptoms:
If the infection spreads to the kidneys or ureters (tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder), it is called Upper UTI. It can be serious if left untreated, as the infection can damage the kidneys or spread to the bloodstream. Upper UTI symptoms include high fever with chills and pain in your sides or back.
recurrent UTI

Recurrent UTIs

About 25% to 30% of women experience recurrent UTIs (RUTI), mainly caused by reinfection by the same pathogen. This does not mean you are doing something wrong, or you’re at fault. Some women are just more prone to UTIs; genes play a role here as well. Before menopause, the most common risk factor is sexual intercourse. After menopause, the change in your hormones thins out the lining of your urinary tract and your body’s normal defence mechanisms go down. This can contribute to increased risk of recurring UTIs. If you have experienced multiple episodes of UTIs, you know it can take a toll on your life. Don’t continue to suffer, and visit your gynaecologist who can help you with treatment as well as advice on how you can prevent future infections.
